Someone asked us recently: "What do I need to start restoring old electronics?"
We told them: 99% isopropyl alcohol, a toothbrush, and patience. That's the honest answer. The tools are simple. The skill is knowing when to stop scrubbing.
But since they asked sincerely, here's the real guide. This is what sits on the bench every day.
The essentials
Isopropyl alcohol, 99%. Not the 70% stuff from the drugstore. The other 30% is water, and water and electronics have a famously bad relationship. 99% evaporates completely, leaves no residue, and won't short anything. A quart bottle costs about eight dollars and lasts months. This is the single most important chemical in your workshop. It cleans thermal paste. It removes flux. It dissolves adhesive. It de-gunks keyboards. It's safe on PCB boards. Buy it in bulk.
A toothbrush. Medium bristles. Not the one you use on your teeth — get a dedicated electronics toothbrush. Cut the handle shorter with a hacksaw if you're working in tight spaces. The bristles get into crevices that cotton swabs can't reach. Replace it when the bristles start to splay.
A set of precision screwdrivers. You need Phillips #00, #0, and #1 at minimum. Also a set of Torx bits — T5 and T6 cover most laptops and phones. The iFixit Mako kit is the standard recommendation for a reason. It's sixty bucks and covers almost everything. You can buy cheaper kits, but you'll strip screws, and a stripped screw in a laptop hinge is a genuinely terrible way to spend an afternoon.
A spudger. This is a plastic pry tool. It looks like a tiny crowbar. It opens cases without scratching them. It disconnects ribbon cables without tearing them. It costs three dollars. Do not use a metal screwdriver for prying — you will scratch the case, damage the clips, or puncture a battery, and punctured lithium batteries are exciting in a way you do not want.
A magnetic parts tray. You will drop screws. They will roll under your desk. The magnetic tray catches them. Number the compartments with a dry-erase marker so you remember which screws go where. Different lengths in the wrong holes will crack a motherboard or leave the case loose. Organization is not optional.
Anti-static mat and wrist strap. You can get away without these for a while, but eventually you'll zap a RAM stick on a dry winter day and wish you'd spent the twenty dollars. The mat also gives you a clean, defined workspace, which matters more than you think.
Good lighting. A desk lamp with a magnifier. You're going to be reading tiny text on tiny components. "SMD" stands for Surface Mount Device, and they are surface mounted and they are tiny. You need light and you need magnification.
The first restoration
Start with something cheap and simple. A USB hub. An old keyboard. A game controller with a sticky button. Do not start with a MacBook. You will be tempted. Resist.
The process is always the same:
- Open it. Figure out how the case comes apart. Look for hidden screws under stickers or rubber feet. If it doesn't open easily, there's a screw you missed or a clip you haven't released. Do not force it.
- Document it. Take photos before you disconnect anything. More photos than you think you need. Ribbon cable orientation. Screw locations. What goes where. You will forget, and the photos will save you.
- Clean it. Compressed air first — blow out the loose dust. Then isopropyl on a cotton swab or toothbrush. Work methodically. Don't soak anything. Let it dry completely before reassembly.
- Diagnose it. If it's broken, figure out what's broken before you start replacing parts. A multimeter is your next tool purchase. Continuity testing will tell you if a cable is bad. Voltage testing will tell you if a power rail is dead. Guessing is expensive.
- Reassemble it. Reverse your documented disassembly. Power it on before closing the case completely — you'll save yourself a re-open if something's not seated right.
When to stop
This is the hardest skill. Knowing when a repair isn't worth it.
If a component requires soldering and you've never soldered before, either practice on scrap boards first or accept that this repair is beyond you for now. Bad soldering destroys boards.
If the part you need costs more than a working replacement device, part out what you can and recycle the rest. The cannibalization economy depends on knowing when to harvest and when to let go.
If you've been working on something for three hours and you're getting frustrated, walk away. Come back tomorrow. Frustration leads to forcing things, and forcing things leads to broken ribbon cables, stripped screws, and regret.
Why bother?
You can buy a new thing. It'll work out of the box. It'll have a warranty.
But you won't know how it works. You won't have saved something from a landfill. You won't have the specific satisfaction of plugging in a device that was dead yesterday and watching it boot up because you fixed it.
That feeling doesn't get old. We have done this thousands of times and it still doesn't get old.
Start small. Be patient. Keep isopropyl nearby.
