"Refurbished" is a word that's been hollowed out by Amazon Marketplace sellers who think wiping a screen with a damp cloth counts as refurbishment. Let me show you what it actually means here.
Every device that comes through GridLab goes through twelve checkpoints. No exceptions. No "it's probably fine." No "the customer won't notice." Twelve points, every time, documented.
The twelve points
1. Visual inspection
Before we even plug it in, we look. Dents, cracks, missing screws, signs of liquid damage, bent pins, bulging capacitors. A surprising amount of diagnostics happens with just your eyes and a flashlight. We have caught liquid damage from a single drop of dried coffee on a motherboard screw — the rest of the board looked pristine. Someone had cleaned it, but they missed that one screw. Always check the screws.
2. Power test
Plug it in. Does it POST? Does it charge? Any unusual sounds — clicking drives, whining capacitors, fans that sound like a small aircraft? If it doesn't power on, we don't assume it's dead — we check the power supply first. You'd be amazed how many "dead" laptops just have a failed charger.
3. Display check
Full-screen color tests. Dead pixel scan. Backlight bleed assessment. Viewing angles. Touchscreen calibration if applicable. A single dead pixel in the corner? We note it and price accordingly. A cluster in the center? That display gets replaced or the unit gets parted out.
4. Input test
Every key. Every port. Every button. USB-A, USB-C, HDMI, DisplayPort, Ethernet, SD card, audio jack, microphone. We have a test suite: a USB drive that checks read/write speeds, an HDMI capture card that verifies video output, a network cable that confirms link negotiation. Missing a port test is how you ship a laptop with a dead USB-C port that the customer discovers when they try to charge it.
5. Battery health
Battery cycle count. Design capacity vs. current capacity. Charge/discharge curve under load. If a battery is below 80% of design capacity, we replace it or note it explicitly in the listing. A "refurbished" phone with a battery that dies in three hours is not refurbished — it's a phone with a worn-out battery in a clean case.
6. Storage health
SMART data for drives. Total bytes written for SSDs. Reallocated sectors, pending sectors, uncorrectable errors. A drive with reallocated sectors is a ticking clock. We don't ship those. We also secure-erase every drive before it leaves — the previous owner's data is not our business, and it's not yours either.
7. Thermal test
Stress test under load. CPU/GPU temperatures at idle and under 100% utilization. Fan behavior — do they ramp up appropriately? Do they make noise? Thermal paste gets replaced if temperatures are outside normal range. We have seen laptops drop 15°C just from fresh thermal paste. The old stuff had turned to chalk.
8. Connectivity
Wi-Fi across 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. Bluetooth pairing and range. Ethernet negotiation. Cellular if applicable. Signal strength compared to reference. A laptop with a flaky Wi-Fi card is a laptop that's going to get returned.
9. Audio
Speakers at full volume — any crackling? Headphone jack — both channels? Microphone — does it pick up clearly? Built-in webcam if applicable. These are the tests people skip because they're tedious. They're also the tests that catch problems customers notice immediately.
10. Physical clean
Disassembly. Compressed air through every vent. Isopropyl alcohol (99%, not the 70% drugstore stuff — water and electronics don't mix) on the motherboard and contacts. Screen cleaned with appropriate solution. Case wiped down. Keyboard cleaned between keys. The device should look like someone cared about it, because someone did.
11. Software load
Clean OS install. No bloatware. Drivers up to date. BIOS/UEFI updated to latest stable version. All firmware current. The device boots to a clean desktop, not a manufacturer's splash screen followed by fifteen pre-installed trial programs.
12. Final QC
A second person checks everything. Fresh eyes catch things the first technician missed. If it passes, it gets photographed, logged, assigned a certification number, and listed. If it doesn't, it goes back to the bench.
What happens when something fails
Not everything passes. Maybe 15% of devices have an issue we can't cost-effectively repair. Those get parted out — working components harvested for other repairs, the rest properly recycled. Nothing goes to landfill from our bench.
A ThinkPad with a cracked screen but a perfect motherboard? The screen gets replaced, or the motherboard goes into another ThinkPad with a dead board but a good screen. This is the cannibalization economy that keeps older hardware alive.
Why this matters
"Refurbished" shouldn't mean "used with a quick wipe-down." It should mean "inspected, repaired, and certified to a documented standard." The twelve points are our standard. They're public. You can hold us to them.
